Iceland: Fire, Ice & the Magic of Saying Yes

A Journey of Learning, Connection & Unforgettable Moments

Some trips change how you see a destination. Others change how you see yourself.
My October journey through Iceland did both.

This adventure brought together an incredible group of women from across the United States and Canada — travel professionals united by a shared belief that travel is not just a job, but a calling. From the very first moment, we became a team, bonded by curiosity, laughter, and a deep love for exploring the world.

After an overnight flight from Seattle, seven hours across the Atlantic, I landed in Reykjavík ready to begin an unforgettable adventure.

Day 1: Reykjavík Energy & Geothermal Bliss

We started the day with a quick breakfast before heading straight into relaxation mode at Sky Lagoon. The Sky Seventy experience was pure bliss — a seven-step ritual of saunas, cold plunges, steam, and ocean views that instantly melted away travel fatigue.

Next came an unforgettable helicopter flight over volcanic craters and lava fields. Low clouds allowed only a brief landing, but the views were surreal — a powerful reminder that Iceland is very much alive beneath your feet.

Back in Reykjavík, we explored the iconic Hallgrímskirkja, wandered museums, sampled the city’s famous hot dogs, and browsed charming shops filled with wool sweaters and cozy hats. A stop for hot chocolate warmed both hands and hearts before we wrapped up the day with an incredible dinner at The Fish Company.

After a long travel day and countless first impressions, we collapsed into bed — hearts full and excited for what tomorrow would bring.

Day 2: Golden Circle Wonders & Countryside Luxury

After a well-earned sleep-in, we set off to explore Iceland’s legendary Golden Circle.

Our first stop was Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates drift apart. Walking through the snowy rift between continents was nothing short of surreal.

Next, we visited the beloved Friðheimar Tomato Farm, enjoying fresh tomato soup, warm bread, and Icelandic butter that might honestly be the best I’ve ever tasted. (Yes — they even grow strawberries here!)

A soothing soak followed at the newly opened Laugarvatn Langoustine Lagoon, intimate, local, and wonderfully peaceful — especially knowing it had only been open for days.

As the sun dipped low, Geysir Geothermal Area delivered a show. Strokkur erupted repeatedly as we watched in awe — nature unapologetically showing off.

That night, we arrived at the magical Torfhús Retreat. A gourmet chef-prepared dinner followed by a soak in a private outdoor hot tub under a sky full of stars made this one of those pinch-me travel moments I’ll never forget.

Day 3: South Coast Drama & Snowy Surprises

I woke up to fresh snow blanketing the landscape — truly straight out of a fairytale. After Icelandic pancakes for breakfast, we headed along the South Coast, passing lava fields, waterfalls, rainbows, and herds of Icelandic horses dusted in snow.

Weather forced the cancellation of our buggy tour, but Iceland always has a Plan B. Lunch at Black Crust Pizza delivered volcanic charcoal dough and unforgettable flavors — especially duck with fig jam.

That evening, we checked into Hotel Jökulsárlón, surrounded by icy beauty. A cocktail made with local Icelandic gin, followed by steak and fries, was a welcome change — and soaking in outdoor hot tubs under falling snow made the night unforgettable… even when the entire town temporarily lost power. Travel moments like these become the best stories.

Day 4: Icebergs, Black Sand & Cozy Countryside

Bundled in our warmest layers, we set off for a zodiac cruise at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Once we zipped around the first iceberg, the lagoon opened into a breathtaking expanse of ice and silence. We were alone for a while — just us, the glacier, and the sound of wind. A powerful reminder of how small we are in nature.

After lunch at Smidjan Brugghus (yes, the chicken sandwich lives up to the hype), we visited Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. Snow falling onto black volcanic sand created a surreal contrast — like standing inside a living postcard.

That night, we arrived at Hotel Rangá, known for its dark skies and Northern Lights viewing. Dinner was divine, and soaking in the hot tub while snow piled around us — barefoot adventure included — was 100% worth it.

Day 5: Horses, Lava Caves & the Perfect Finale

Our final day began at an Icelandic horse stable, learning about one of the world’s purest horse breeds — gentle, strong, and famous for their smooth tölt gait. Brushing, feeding, and watching them play in the snow was such a heartwarming start.

Next, we ventured underground into Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel, a 5,000-year-old lava cave. Standing in complete darkness deep beneath the earth was both humbling and unforgettable.

Then came pure luxury at the Blue Lagoon Retreat. From private thermal pools to the iconic lagoon, followed by the full spa ritual and a Michelin-starred dinner at Moss Restaurant, it was an experience that felt indulgent in all the right ways.

And finally — the Northern Lights. Wrapped in blankets, we watched the aurora dance across the sky, brighter and bolder by the minute. Later, I curled up on my balcony with a glass of wine, watching the lights shimmer until sleep finally won.

Why Iceland Left Its Mark

Iceland is raw, powerful, luxurious, unpredictable — and incredibly moving. This journey reminded me why firsthand experience matters, and why saying yes to opportunities like this makes me a better travel advisor for my clients.

From volcanic landscapes to intimate moments of connection, Iceland gave me adventure, beauty, and magic — all in one unforgettable journey.
